Today's Project

The Toledo Zoo is so amazing and we have visited it rather often... as it's only a wonderful drive down the Anthony Wayne Trail.  Some of the most exciting times are when they announce the arrivals of babies and then there are contests to select names for them.  One such contest happened when my son was in primary school for the arrival of a baby elephant and, of course, we voted along with many, many other local citizens.  We frequented the zoo often during his early years just to catch glimpses of Lucas.  For this blog post, I'm totally relying on the internet for his pictures that remind me of my glimpses of him...  click here to see an adorable picture of him on Pinterest.  You can also click here to view several adorable videos of Lucas in action including the sad announcement by The Toledo Zoo of his death.

Elephant Parade stamp set allowed me to play with different colors inspired by the many adventures of Lucas the Elephant (2011-2021).

The inspiration for today's project is Lucas from the Toledo Zoo.  The Elephant Parade stamp set was perfect to reflect our love of Lucas!  Unfortunately, Lucas will never ever grow up as he died from an elephant virus in April 2021 at the young age of nine.  Lucas filled the lives of so many people who watched and cared for him with much joy.  The Toledo Zoo currently has two elephants Renee (Lucas' mother) and Twiggy.

Project Details

The Elephant Parade stamp set from the 2022-2023 Annual Catalog was used for creating selection of cards inspired by the Tembo Trail backgrounds at The Toledo Zoo.  The Linen Specialty Paper was used as the backdrop for the draw attention to the texture of these wonderful creatures... wrinkly and soft.

The linen was colored with a Blending Brush and Petal Pink ink using a circular motion for complete coverage of color.  The application was repeated numerous times to achieve the desired color.  The edges of the linen was frayed on all sides and adhered directly to Thick Basic White card base.  The Natural Prints wreath die was die-cut from Soft Sea Foam cardstock and trimmed a wee bit to offset on the linen.  The sentiment was stamped with Petal Pink ink and die-cut with the Tailored Tags die.  White Baker's Twine was doubled and tied off with a bow.

The Gray Granite watercolored elephant was selected for this card front.  Don't you just love the softness created for this card for a sweet baby?

The linen for the second card was colored with a Blending Brush and Calypso Coral ink.  Unfortunately, a big splat of ink appeared during the blending process, but alas, the problem was covered up with the Pear Pizzazz watercolored elephant leaves!  Such a fun fix, don't you think?!  The linen was frayed and adhered directly onto the Petal Pink card base.  The sentiment was heat embossed on Petal Pink cardstock to compliment the card base.

The elephant watercolored with Basic Gray was chosen for this card.  And his little friend the mouse was watercolored with Gray Granite for the inside.  The leaves were stamped on Basic White and filled in with a Blender Pen drawing ink off of the lines... much like the technique used for coloring the elephant with the damp Fine Tip Water Painter.

The third card was created with the second blending of the Calypso Coral... meaning not much ink was added to the brush thanks to the darker application of the previous background.  This linen was not frayed... well, it was started until it was obvious the linen was cut off skew so it was adhered to a Petal Pink layer and trimmed to a clean edge.  The watercolored elephant leaves were arranged for the elephant to sit on... looking up at the watercolored butterfly.  The heat embossed sentiment was a perfect across the front of the linen layer.

The elephant watercolored with Smoky Slate ink was used for this card.  The elephant leaves and the butterfly were featured in the corners of the inside layer... once again relying on the detailing of the Blender Pen for the color application.

Should not wish to fussy cut these adorable images as I have, this stamp set has coordinating dies (which I do not have) to make life easier for you.
