Shaking Things Up with a Hexagon Pinwheel Card!

Around the World on Wednesday Blog Hop Banner

Hello and welcome to the Around the World on Wednesday Blog Hop!  We are glad you have joined us and look forward to spending time with you as we Shake Things Up as we try something new to us.  So sit back and enjoy your favorite cuppa as you enjoy your trip Around the World on Wednesday!

This past month several of my friends hopping along today did a Midyear Summer Challenge with me "to shake things up" where we set goals in three areas of our lives (health, business and personal) picking at least one thing in each category to work on for the week(s).  This is the fourth week... and I must say that these ladies accomplished a lot of things that they did not realize that they would.  And, of course, there were some things that did not get accomplished, but guess what?  They kept trying!  So please give some extra love to Jan, Cheryll, Mikaela, Tricia, Sharon and Tina (who's not hopping today), for sticking with  me on this challenge.  These stampers were amazing!

Today's Project

This Shake It Up! challenge got me to try something that I've been wanting to try every since I saw this amazing Hexagon Pinwheel Card by Sam of Mixed Up Craft.  The dimensions that she provided created these lovely larger cards; however, I wanted to make it work for our Medium Envelopes.  So with some a bit of determination, creativity and energy overflowing from the Midyear Summer Challenge, I did it!!!

This is such an easy fun-fold to create!  With Basic White Cardstock, a stamp set and some ink - oh the possibilities are just limitless!  And then if you toss in punches and/or dies... oh my!  I hope that you will give this a go.

Project Details

Cut and score the Basic White Cardstock (dimensions and paper cuts for everything are at the end of this blog post under "Time to Use Your Paper Trimmer") card base.  Burnish the folds with your Bone Folder.  Adhere the smallest end with liquid glue along the last score line to form the hexagon card base.

Die cut six panels with the Ornate Layers Die and trim to 1-3/4" wide.  Now the fun begins!  It's time to stamp die-cut layers.  The Delicate Dahlias sentiment was stamped in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink onto five different layers using the Hinge Stamping technique with the Stamparatus.

Stamp the smaller dahlia image in Daffodil Delight ink on the five stamped die-cut layers.  Clean the stamp and repeat with Poppy Parade and Melon Mambo inks.  Stamp the small leaf image in Granny Apple Green and stamp as you desire (I tend to use the 3 leaves rule for balance).  The remaining blank die-cut panel is where you will correspond to the recipient so leave it intentionally blank.  Arrange the layers as you wish being careful to note the direction of the "spinning pinwheel".  Adhere to hexagon sides with Multipurpose Liquid Glue one at a time being careful to line up with the sides and the score line.

This cards folds flat nicely...just remember that however you flatten it will be how the recipient will first see it.  You might wish to enclose a "how-to" stand note to the recipient if you feel they will not be able to figure out that it's a stand alone card.

Lining the envelope protects the card along with everyone not seeing what's inside before it's opened.  I used a Blending Brush with some Coastal Cabana on it from yesterday's project to add color to the Beautifully Penned Designer Series Paper... and I also stamped on it repeatedly to make it my own to compliment the card.

  3. I love this pretty card and all of the creativity involved, especially how you incorporated the dies and stamped on that wavy DSP. I might have to give this a try this during playtime with one of my downline this weekend.

    1. Thanks so much, Chris! Yes, the stamping on the SAB DSP was a fun thing that I decided to do after the liner was in the envelope - so glad I hadn't adhered it, yet, as it made it easier to stamp. :)

  10. Beautiful card Angie! I like the idea of a card that can be displayed - with a bunch of paper flowers inside it could be beautiful - One question however, does it have to repeat the pattern on all sides? One could imagine like a story told on each shutter? There you have it, this creation gives me a lot of ideas anyway, which makes it an undeniable success! Thank you for sharing !

    1. Of course! Doing a story around the card would be fabulous... something that the recipient could enjoy whenever they wish just by turning it. Making it with like or gradient (like I did) makes it easier to choose which side the recipient wished to display. Cannot wait to see what you create with this fun-fold, Aurélie! :)
